Geometric Art Inspired by Medieval Manuscripts and Tolkien’s Legendarium
Measured reconstruction, Insular geometry, and hand‑drawn craft from Irish artist Michael Taaffe
I’m an Irish artist working with the visual language of medieval manuscripts and the imaginative world of Tolkien. My work starts with structure—proportion, rhythm, and the underlying geometry that holds a page together. I build each piece by hand, layer by layer, using simple tools and the same kind of disciplined approach the early scribes relied on. From there, I bring in decoration, linework, and colour.
I’m interested in how these traditions meet: how Tengwar and Númenórean forms might look if they were shaped by the habits and instincts of Insular craft. The result is new work that feels grounded and intentional, and built with respect for the older pages that inspire it.
